Punjab Law College Shooting: Student Kills Classmate Inside Classroom
A shocking incident took place on 9 February 2026 at a law college in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, where a first-year law student allegedly shot his female classmate inside a classroom and then turned the weapon on himself. The incident occurred at Mai Bhago Law College in Usma village, leaving the academic community and the public shaken and raising serious concerns about campus safety.
According to police officials, 19-year-old Sandeep Kaur, a first-year law student and resident of Naushehra Pannuan village, was sitting inside the classroom with her classmates when the incident occurred. Another student, 20-year-old Prince Raj, also enrolled in the first year of the law course and a resident of Mallian village, allegedly pulled out a firearm from his bag and fired at her at close range. Sandeep sustained a fatal gunshot injury to the head and died on the spot.
After shooting his classmate, Prince Raj allegedly turned the firearm on himself and shot himself in the head. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition, where he remains under medical care.

CCTV Footage Captures the Incident
CCTV footage from inside the classroom has captured the sequence of events leading up to the shooting. The footage reportedly shows Prince Raj standing up from his seat, removing a firearm from his bag, and firing directly at Sandeep Kaur. Moments later, chaos erupts inside the classroom as students flee in panic.
The footage also shows another female student attempting to check on Sandeep before running out of the classroom after realising she was unresponsive. The incident lasted only a few seconds but left students and faculty traumatised.
Family Questions Campus Security
Sandeep Kaur’s mother, Harjinder Kaur, who works as a daily wage labourer and was the sole breadwinner for her family of eight children, reached the college after being informed by authorities. She stated that she was “not told that she was shot” and was devastated upon seeing her daughter’s body.
Questioning the lack of security on campus, she asked:
“How did a student carry a pistol into a classroom? Does the college have any security system at all?”
Her statement has sparked widespread concern over the absence of security checks and preventive measures in educational institutions.

Police Investigation and Possible Motive
Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagbir Singh confirmed that the shooting took place before the class had officially begun. Police have seized the mobile phones of both the accused and the deceased to examine their communications and ascertain the motive behind the crime.
According to police, a preliminary inquiry suggests a “friendship angle” as a possible motive behind the shooting. Statements of students and staff present at the time of the incident are being recorded, and CCTV footage from multiple angles is being analysed as part of the investigation.
A formal First Information Report (FIR) has been registered, and authorities are examining how the firearm was brought onto the college premises.
Campus Shock and Safety Concerns
The incident has sent shockwaves through the student community and reignited debates on campus safety, mental health awareness, and firearm accessibility. Following the incident, the college campus was temporarily sealed, and students were sent home as a precautionary measure.
Authorities have assured that all aspects of the incident, including security lapses and administrative responsibility, will be thoroughly investigated.
Conclusion
The fatal shooting at Mai Bhago Law College highlights urgent concerns regarding campus security and student safety. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring accountability, understanding the motive behind the crime, and preventing such tragic incidents in educational institutions in the future.
